Who's Little Timmy?
"Little Timmy" (2001)
It all began when I was 12 years old... My dad, better known as "Father John," called the Mark & Brian Radio Program during one of their "radio bits" to try and win some Disneyland tickets to see the premiere screening of FANTASMIC! Well, Mark & Brian were looking for kids who could play a musical instrument in their "Small World" band... so my dad called up the station and went "on the air" with the wacky radio hosts. He explained to them what type of instrument I played, and then held the phone up to my accordion... I remember they had me play the tune "It's a small world after all" with another kid who played the trumpet, and a guy who played some glasses filled with water. It was a VERY interesting sound. :o) Well, my dad and I won the Disneyland tickets and had a BLAST that next evening at the "Par-tay!"
When I was 16 years old, we again called the radio station to try and win some Dodger tickets. I remember playing the "William Tell Overture" for Mark & Brian. They loved it so much, we won tickets to the game; however, they had one small request... Everytime the Dodgers scored a run, they wanted me to stand up from where I was sitting and play a chorus of the "William Tell Overture" on my accordion! Unfortuantely due to the ballpark security, I wasn't able to bring my accordion into the stadium... But we still had TONS of FUN, and I'm happy to report that the Dodgers did win the game that day! "Go BLUE!!!!"
So now that brings us to where all the FUN actually starts! You see, the producer of Mark & Brian's radio program at ABC's KLOS studio, Mr. Frank Murphy, called me at home and asked if I knew any "Guns and Roses" material on the accordion. He had "lead guitarist" Slash coming on the show in a few days, and thought it would be a funny bit if the accordion and electric guitar played "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" together. Well, I didn't know any of their music on the accordion, but I told him I could go and get a CD and learn some songs really quick... This was on a Tuesday and the show was being taped on Thursday morning at 6am! So on Wednesday I went to the local music store and picked up some "Guns and Roses" albums. I learned "Paradise City", "Welcome to the Jungle", and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." After playing a couple of the songs Mark & Brian asked Slash if he would pick up his guitar and jam a little "Knockin' on Heaven's Door with "Little Timmy" the resident official KLOS accordionist. He did, and we went live 4 1/2 minutes on the radio! After we finished, Mark and Brian came back on the air and said, "It was meant to be a funny joke, but that rocked!"
A couple weeks later I recevied another call from producer Frank Murphy. He had Tony Bennett scheduled to be on the show and wanted me to do the same thing that I did for Slash... So again I went out on Wednesday and bought some albums, learned them for Thursday morning. While I was playing for Mr. Tony Bennett, he just stared at my belt. After the station went to a commercial break I asked Mr. Bennett what he was looking at, and he said, "Kid, you sure are an optimist... I've never seen an accordionist with a pager!" He found this very ammusing. (I was actually going out on commercial auditions as an actor, and the pager was for my agent to reach me.)
Well, a couple months later I received one more call from Mark & Brian's producer. He had scheduled the rock band "Chicago" to appear on the show, and naturally I was excited to go...
